About

The Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish (Rineloricaria sp. 'Red') is a captive-bred color variant of the whiptail catfish group, featuring an elongated, flattened body with distinctive brick-red to orange-red coloration across its plated body. In the wild, related species inhabit slow-moving, shallow rivers and streams in South America, where they graze on algae, biofilm, and organic detritus from submerged wood and leaf litter.

In the aquarium, Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish are highly peaceful and undemanding. They spend most of their time clinging to driftwood, flat rocks, and the substrate, where they graze on aufwuchs (algae and biofilm). Their behavior is calm and non-disruptive to other tank inhabitants. Unlike many plecos, they remain small (around 10–12 cm) and are suitable for medium-sized community aquariums.

These catfish are notable for their unique breeding behavior: males guard and fan eggs deposited in sheltered caves or PVC pipes. The fry are miniature versions of the adults and are relatively easy to raise on biofilm and fine foods.

Although they will consume some algae, they should be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional meaty foods to ensure complete nutrition. Good water quality with gentle to moderate flow and well-oxygenated water is important for long-term health.

Care Guide

Water Parameters: Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish prefer slightly soft to moderately hard water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, GH 4–15. They appreciate gentle to moderate current with good oxygenation. Avoid stagnant, poorly oxygenated conditions.

Tank Setup: A 60-liter minimum is suitable for a pair or small group. Provide plenty of driftwood, flat smooth rocks, and caves or PVC pipe sections for shelter and potential breeding sites. A sandy or fine-gravel substrate with leaf litter adds natural cover. Live plants are tolerated and appreciated.

Feeding: Supplement natural algae grazing with sinking algae wafers, blanched zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. Occasional meaty foods like frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp are beneficial. Feed in the evening when the fish are most active.

Tankmates: Ideal community fish — peaceful with virtually all non-aggressive species. Good with tetras, rasboras, gouramis, and other calm bottom-dwellers. Do not house with large, boisterous fish that may stress them or compete aggressively for food.

Breeding: Pairs will spawn readily in caves or PVC pipes. Males fan the eggs until hatching. Fry accept fine-ground algae wafers and infusoria. Easy to breed with the right conditions.
