Rineloricaria sp. LDA028
Also known as: Red Lizard Whiptail Pleco, LDA028, Red Lizard Pleco
Origin: Rio Nanay, Peru
Rineloricaria sp. LDA028, the Red Lizard Whiptail Pleco, is one of the most visually distinctive loricariids available in the aquarium hobby. Its entire body is a vivid scarlet-red to brick-red, and it possesses the characteristic elongated, whip-like tail filament of the Rineloricaria genus. Unlike most plecos, it is active during the day and can frequently be observed grazing across sandy substrates and plant leaves.
This species originates from the sandy-bottomed, plant-rich sections of the Rio Nanay drainage in Peru. It prefers slow to moderate water movement and a soft substrate that it can root through while searching for food. Planted aquariums with gentle current suit it well. It is an entirely peaceful species that poses no threat to tankmates, plants, or decorations.
The Red Lizard is an omnivore accepting algae wafers, Repashy, bloodworms, and blanched vegetables. Breeding in captivity is achievable and follows the typical Rineloricaria pattern of depositing eggs on flat surfaces, with the male guarding the clutch. It makes an excellent and unusual centrepiece in a Peruvian biotope aquarium.
Water: 25–29°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately soft; gentle to moderate flow, good filtration. Tank: Minimum 80 L; fine sandy substrate, planted sections, driftwood, flat stones for egg-laying. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, Repashy, bloodworms, brine shrimp, blanched courgette. Breeding: Egg-layer on flat surfaces; male guards clutch; moderately easy in well-maintained setups. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community fish; safe with plants, no aggression toward tankmates.
