Oryzias latipes
Also known as: Red Medaka, Hi Medaka
Origin: Captive-bred (Japan)
Oryzias latipes 'Red' is a selectively bred strain of the Japanese Medaka developed over centuries of Japanese aquaculture, displaying a warm uniform red-to-orange body colouration with translucent fins. Like all medaka, it is remarkably hardy and tolerates a wide range of temperatures, including cool conditions — making it suitable for unheated indoor setups and outdoor ponds in temperate climates. It breeds freely and raises fry with relative ease.
Water: 16–28 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, adaptable (GH 5–20). Tank: 20 L minimum; surface plants appreciated; can be kept in outdoor ponds. Feeding: Omnivore — medaka or tropical flake, micro pellets, live/frozen Daphnia. Behaviour: Peaceful surface schooler; keep 6+ for natural group behaviour. Compatibility: Excellent with other medaka, small peaceful community fish, and nano shrimp.
