Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Red Melon Discus, Melon Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Red Melon Discus is one of the best-known solid-red domestic strains, celebrated for its smooth, deep-red body pigmentation devoid of any significant pattern. The name refers to the resemblance of its flesh-red colour to the interior of a ripe watermelon — a rich, saturated, appetising hue.
Top-quality Red Melons are further characterised by an exceptionally rounded, deep body profile — the hallmark of selective breeding for show quality. The red coloration is carotenoid-dependent; without a diet rich in astaxanthin and carotenoids, the colour fades to a disappointing orange-brown.
This strain is an excellent companion to blue and turquoise strains in a mixed discus display, providing warm-toned contrast. It is also a popular choice for breeders seeking a reliable, commercially successful solid-red line.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; low nitrates essential for colour retention. Tank: Minimum 250 L, dark substrate and background, moderate warm lighting to enhance red tones. Feeding: Astaxanthin and carotenoid-rich discus pellets, beefheart, bloodworm; avoid pale foods that dilute colour. Breeding: Prolific; pairs readily on vertical surfaces; both parents guard eggs and tend fry. Compatibility: Peaceful with other discus, cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, and small Corydoras.
