Parosphromenus rubrimontis
Also known as: Red Mountain Licorice Gourami
Origin: Sumatra
Parosphromenus rubrimontis is named for its red-accented colouration ('red mountain') and is endemic to highland peat stream habitats in Sumatra. It is among the rarer Parosphromenus species in cultivation and requires the same specialised blackwater conditions common to the genus. Males in breeding condition display striking red and iridescent blue markings.
Water: temp 22–26°C, pH 3.5–6.0, very soft; slightly cooler than lowland species. Tank: minimum 30L species tank; leaf litter, peat substrate, dense planting. Feeding: carnivore — live micro-invertebrates; artemia nauplii, daphnia, and micro worms. Behaviour: peaceful; males display vivid breeding colouration to attract females. Compatibility: best in species-only setup; avoid hard water community fish entirely.
