Astronotus ocellatus
Also known as: Red Oscar, Red Tiger Oscar
Origin: South America (captive line)
The Red Oscar is a selective breeding line of Astronotus ocellatus in which the natural orange-red markings of the wild form have been amplified and extended to cover the majority of the body. Where a wild Oscar displays discrete patches of orange on a dark background, the Red Oscar shows continuous red-orange colouration across much of its flanks, creating a dramatically vivid display fish.
Oscars in general are highly regarded for their intelligence and interactive personalities, and the Red Oscar is no exception. These fish quickly learn to recognise their owners, anticipate feeding times, and interact with objects and hands near the aquarium. They are among the most engaging large aquarium fish and have been nicknamed 'water dogs' by enthusiasts.
The Red Oscar's large size, heavy bioload, and messy feeding habits demand a large, well-filtered aquarium. Despite these demands, it is a robust and forgiving fish that tolerates moderate husbandry errors far better than more sensitive species.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; large water changes weekly essential given the heavy bioload. Tank: Minimum 400L; powerful external filtration; minimal décor as Oscars rearrange everything; secure lid required. Feeding: Carnivore; large cichlid pellets, frozen krill, earthworms; avoid feeder fish to prevent disease introduction. Breeding: Forms monogamous pairs; open substrate spawner; both parents guard eggs and wriggler fry intensively. Compatibility: Aggressive; keep with other large cichlids of similar size; will eat any fish small enough to fit in its mouth.
