Crenicichla sp. 'Atabapo' is an undescribed pike cichlid from the Atabapo river of Venezuela, a tributary of the Orinoco. Its dramatic red-orange and black colouration is among the most vivid of any pike cichlid. Requires very soft, warm water and is best kept as a pair or alone.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 5.5-6.8, very soft acidic water essential. Tank: Minimum 300L, smooth driftwood and flat stones, leaf litter optional, strong filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; live or frozen fish, large prawn, quality large carnivore pellets. Behaviour: Aggressive and territorial; males will fight viciously without sufficient space. Compatibility: Species-only or opposite-sex pair only; not suitable for community tanks.
