Vittina waigiensis
Also known as: Red Racer Nerite Snail, Racing Stripe Nerite
Origin: Southeast Asia / Pacific Islands
Vittina waigiensis, the Red Racer Nerite, is one of the most visually striking freshwater nerite snails available, displaying an intensely orange-red shell overlaid with dramatic black longitudinal stripes. True to its common name, it is among the more active nerite species, moving rapidly across surfaces in search of algae. It is particularly effective at removing green spot algae and diatoms and will not overpopulate in freshwater.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18, KH 4–10; avoid soft or acidic water. Tank: minimum 20 L, ample hard surfaces; secure lid — this species is an active escapee. Feeding: algae, diatoms, biofilm; supplement with algae wafers and blanched vegetables. Behaviour: active, fast-moving grazer; more mobile than many nerites. Compatibility: fully peaceful; excellent with shrimp and community fish.
