Carassius auratus
Also known as: Red Ranchu, King of Goldfish, Maruko
Origin: Japan
The Ranchu is widely considered the pinnacle of fancy goldfish breeding, especially in Japan where it is the subject of dedicated exhibitions. The Red Ranchu's deep orange-red coloration, arched back, and developing head wen make it a prize specimen. It requires pristine water quality and careful feeding to avoid buoyancy disorders.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, zero ammonia/nitrite, high dissolved oxygen. Tank: minimum 150 L, shallow tank preferred, no heater needed. Feeding: sinking pellets (never floating, to prevent gulping air), peas, daphnia twice daily. Behaviour: slow, bottom-dwelling; may struggle in strong currents. Compatibility: keep only with other ranchu or similar slow-moving fancy goldfish.
