Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Red Rose Discus, Rose Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Red Rose Discus occupies the richest, deepest end of the red discus colour spectrum — a saturated rose-to-crimson pigmentation that glows under warm aquarium lighting. Unlike the brighter Marlboro Red or Fire Red, the Red Rose has a slightly cooler, more burgundy quality to its red that gives it an almost luxurious appearance.
Developed through careful crossing of Marlboro Red and high-red pigeon blood lines, the Red Rose strain requires a carotenoid-rich diet to sustain the depth of its red pigment. Any dietary deficiency quickly leads to fading toward a flat orange-red tone.
This strain performs beautifully as the warm anchor in a mixed discus display. Group five or more together against a dark background for a display that rivals any marine reef tank in visual impact.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; frequent partial water changes critical. Tank: Minimum 250 L, dark substrate and background, warm moderate lighting, Amazon driftwood. Feeding: Astaxanthin-rich pellets, beefheart, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; feed 2-3 times daily. Breeding: Reliable open spawner; pairs form naturally within a group; vertical slate or cone preferred. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other discus, cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, small Corydoras.
