Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Red Snakeskin Guppy, Red Cobra Snakeskin Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Trinidad)
The Red Snakeskin Guppy fuses two of the most admired guppy traits — vivid red body colouration and intricate black cobra reticulation — into a single dramatic fish. The pattern extends from the body into the caudal and dorsal fins, creating a rich tapestry of colour.
This strain rewards keepers who maintain hard, mineral-rich water, as soft acidic conditions reduce the intensity of both the red pigment and the snakeskin reticulation. Regular feeding with colour-enhancing foods further deepens the red tones.
A natural conversation piece in any community aquarium, the Red Snakeskin male is also a popular choice for breeding projects aiming to combine red colouration with patterned fins.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; hard water sharpens both red and reticulation. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted; avoid fin-nipping species. Feeding: Colour-enhancing flake, Astaxanthin-rich foods, live Daphnia; 2–3 meals daily. Breeding: Livebearer; 20–50 fry per brood; strain-breed with snakeskin females for pattern retention. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish.
