Heros efasciatus
Also known as: Red Spot Severum, Redspot Severum, Spotted Severum
Origin: Captive bred (South America)
The Red Spot Severum is a captive-developed line of Heros efasciatus that selects for intensified red-orange spotting and vermiculation on the flanks and head of mature males. The background body colour is a vivid green-gold that provides an excellent contrast to the orange-red markings, creating an overall appearance of striking colour complexity.
Mature males of this line display particularly vivid facial worm-like (vermiculate) markings that are a characteristic expression of the genus Heros in breeding condition. The combination of green-gold body, orange-red spots, and vermiculate markings makes this one of the most visually appealing large cichlid varieties available.
Care requirements are identical to the Golden Severum and all other Heros cichlids. The Red Spot is equally peaceful for its size and can be kept in large community aquariums with appropriate tankmates.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5; stable conditions; moderate water hardness acceptable. Tank: 250L minimum; community capable with large peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. Feeding: Omnivore; colour-enhancing pellets, frozen foods, leafy vegetables; rosette plant leaves may be nibbled. Breeding: Pair bond; spawns on flat surfaces; excellent parental care from both sexes. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; ideal with Amazonian community cichlids, large catfish, and robust characins.
