Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Red Spotted Green Discus, Green Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, Brazil)
The Red Spotted Green Discus bridges the gap between wild-type aesthetics and the reliability of captive-bred stock. An iridescent emerald-green base overlaid with vivid red spots creates a jewel-like appearance that catches the eye from across the room.
This strain is derived from green discus lines and retains the warmer water and soft-water preferences of its wild ancestors. The red spotting intensifies on a high-protein, carotenoid-rich diet and under warm, slightly dimmed lighting conditions.
A group of five or more in a well-planted Amazon biotope, with cardinal tetras as dither fish, creates one of the most visually impressive freshwater displays achievable in the hobby.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, very soft to soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; high dissolved oxygen. Tank: Minimum 250 L, tall format, planted with Echinodorus and Vallisneria, subdued lighting. Feeding: High-protein pellets with astaxanthin, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, daphnia. Breeding: Spawns on broad leaves or vertical slate; biparental; fry feed on parental mucus for first week. Compatibility: Group with other discus, cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, and peaceful catfish.
