Mastacembelus erythrotaenia
Also known as: Red-Stripe Spiny Eel, Selectively Bred Fire Eel, Enhanced Fire Eel
Origin: Southeast Asia (captive-bred)
This selectively bred form of Mastacembelus erythrotaenia has been developed by specialist farms in Southeast Asia to produce fish with an exceptionally intense and uniform red lateral stripe contrasting against a deeper, richer black body. Compared to wild-type fire eels, this variant shows enhanced colour consistency from juvenile to adult and reaches full colouration earlier.
Care requirements are identical to the standard fire eel: very large aquarium, deep fine sand, excellent filtration, and a completely sealed lid. Its powerful burrowing instinct and nocturnal lifestyle mean that most of the day is spent hidden, but the fish will emerge confidently at feeding time once settled.
Earthworms are the preferred food and reliably trigger a strong feeding response. Frozen bloodworm, prawns, and sinking pellets complete the diet. This form is best suited to advanced keepers with the space and infrastructure to maintain a large predator aquarium properly over its potentially two-decade lifespan.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 5–15, KH 2–8. Tank: Minimum 400 L, deep fine sand, excellent filtration, fully sealed lid essential. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms preferred, bloodworm, prawns, mussel, and sinking pellets. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; rare in captivity even for specialist breeders. Compatibility: Large robust community fish only; will consume small fish and invertebrates.
