Aphyosemion striatum
Also known as: Red-striped Killifish, Striatum Killifish
Origin: Gabon, Equatorial Guinea
Aphyosemion striatum is one of the most widely kept and recommended starter killifish, appreciated for its bold red-striped pattern and relatively forgiving temperament. Native to forest streams in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, it tolerates a wider range of water conditions than many relatives. The males are strikingly beautiful and the species spawns readily in mops or fine-leaved plants.
Water: 20–25 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 30 L planted species tank with spawning mops; tight lid (confident jumper). Feeding: Live Daphnia and Artemia preferred; will accept quality micro-pellets. Behaviour: Males occasionally chase rivals; keep one male with two to three females. Compatibility: Good species tank fish; tolerant enough for some nano community setups.
