Melanotaenia rubrostriata
Also known as: Red-striped Rainbowfish
Origin: Papua New Guinea (highlands)
Melanotaenia rubrostriata is native to highland streams and rivers of Papua New Guinea, where it inhabits cool, clear, well-oxygenated water. The striking red lateral striping is unique among its near relatives and makes it a visually distinctive addition to a rainbowfish collection. Prefers slightly cooler temperatures than most tropical melanotaeniids, reflecting its highland origins.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: 100 L+, well-oxygenated with moderate to strong water flow. Feeding: Omnivore; flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; prefers cooler conditions. Compatibility: Good with other highland or cool-water rainbowfish and peaceful species.
