Red-striped Splendid Rainbowfish

Melanotaenia splendida rubrostriata is a subspecies of the broadly distributed M. splendida complex, occurring in the Fly and Strickland River drainages of Papua New Guinea. It is distinguishable from other subspecies by the particularly intense and vivid red mid-lateral striping that develops in dominant males, making it one of the most colourful members of the complex. The flanks carry rows of scales with vivid red edges over a silver-blue base, and the fins are tipped with orange-red.

This subspecies thrives in the moderately warm lowland rivers of its range and requires somewhat warmer conditions than the Australian members of the M. splendida group. It is moderately available through specialist suppliers and offers a slightly different look to the more commonly seen Australian forms.

Care and breeding follow standard Melanotaenia splendida protocols. The species is a free-spawning egg scatterer and produces moderate to large spawns when well conditioned on a varied diet. Fry are reasonably robust.

Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 23–28°C, moderately hard; consistent conditions and regular water changes maintain stripe vividness. Tank: Minimum 200 L; dense lateral planting with wide-open midwater zone; moderate to brisk current. Feeding: Quality flake and pellets; live and frozen invertebrate foods regularly for peak colouration. Breeding: Egg scatterer; spawns on fine plants or mops; moderate to large clutches; fry robust. Compatibility: Peaceful with other medium-to-large rainbowfish and calm community fish.
