Procambarus clarkii
Also known as: Red Swamp Crayfish, Louisiana Crayfish, Red Crayfish
Origin: Southern USA
Procambarus clarkii is the most widely distributed freshwater crayfish in the world, native to the southern USA but now established globally. Its vivid red colouration, large size, and robust constitution make it a popular centrepiece animal, though it is predatory toward small fish, shrimp, and plants. It thrives in a dedicated single-species setup.
Water: 15–27°C, pH 7.0–8.0; highly tolerant of varied conditions; avoid copper medications. Tank: Minimum 100L with caves and PVC tubes; strong filtration required due to high waste output. Feeding: Pellets, blanched vegetables, frozen meaty foods; will eat virtually anything offered. Behaviour: Bold and territorial; actively hunts; will uproot plants and rearrange décor nightly. Compatibility: Best kept alone; will eat shrimp, snails, and slow-moving bottom fish.
