About

Labeo bicolor is one of the most recognisable freshwater fish in the hobby, despite being listed as Endangered in its native Thailand where wild populations have declined dramatically. Its striking monochromatic coloration — jet-black body and vivid scarlet tail — makes it instantly eye-catching. Territorial toward its own kind and related species, it is best kept as the sole representative of its type in a well-decorated tank with caves and plants to establish territories.

Care Guide

Water: 22–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15). Tank: 200 L minimum; caves, driftwood, and ample hiding spots; single specimen only. Feeding: Omnivore — algae wafers, sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, vegetable matter. Behaviour: Territorial and semi-aggressive toward similar-looking fish; peaceful with dissimilar species. Compatibility: Good with medium robust fish like barbs and larger tetras; avoid other Labeo.
