Epalzeorhynchos bicolor
Origin: Thailand (captive-bred; extinct in wild)
Epalzeorhynchos bicolor, the Red-Tailed Black Shark, is one of the most recognised freshwater fish — its jet-black body and brilliant red caudal fin are unmistakable. Native to Thailand, it is unfortunately now extinct in the wild. A bottom-dweller that grazes algae and detritus, it is highly territorial with its own species but generally peaceful with different species in well-aquascaped tanks. Best kept as the sole Red-Tail. Suitable for community tanks with active mid-water fish that don't threaten its territory.
Single specimen per tank. Temperature 22–26 °C. Provide caves and defined territories. Feed algae wafers, sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm. Aggressive toward other bottom-dwelling fish. Excellent algae grazer. Provide plants and driftwood for territory landmarks.
