Labeotropheus trewavasae
Also known as: Red Top Trewavasae, Red Top Labeotropheus
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
The Red Top Trewavasae is a captive-selected colour form of Labeotropheus trewavasae, a rock-grazing mbuna with a distinctive under-slung mouth for scraping algae. The 'Red Top' variant is prized for its sharp contrast between the blue body and vivid red dorsal fin. It is a robust, moderately aggressive mbuna suitable for experienced cichlid keepers.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; high turnover filtration. Tank: Minimum 200L; dense rocky structure with algae-covered surfaces for natural grazing. Feeding: Spirulina-based pellets and algae wafers; protein sparingly as it can cause bloat. Behaviour: Moderately aggressive; males pursue females relentlessly — provide multiple females and hiding spots. Compatibility: Mbuna community; compatible with most other medium mbuna.
