Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Red Turquoise Discus, Red Turquoise
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, Brazil)
The Red Turquoise Discus is arguably the most historically significant domestic strain, representing the meeting point between the warm reds of pigeon blood genetics and the vivid horizontal striping of the turquoise line. The result is a fish of remarkable chromatic contrast — fire-red body against electric-blue turquoise lines.
First popularised in the 1980s and 1990s, Red Turquoise remains a top seller because it encapsulates what discus enthusiasts admire: vivid multicolour expression, symmetrical body shape, and peaceful temperament. Diet enriched with astaxanthin and carotenoids will deepen both the red and turquoise pigments.
This strain is an outstanding choice for a mixed discus display, where its warm tones provide visual balance against cooler blue and white strains.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; high-frequency partial water changes recommended. Tank: Minimum 250 L, tall format, driftwood, subdued warm lighting to enhance red-turquoise contrast. Feeding: Astaxanthin and carotenoid-enriched discus pellets, beefheart, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp. Breeding: Classic open spawner; reliable breeder in stable conditions; remove first clutch to protect from stress eating. Compatibility: Superb community fish; ideal with cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, peaceful catfish.
