Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Red Wag Hi-Fin Platy, Hi-Fin Red Wagtail Platy
Origin: Captive bred
The Red Wag Hi-Fin Platy merges three of the most sought-after platy traits into a single fish: the vivid scarlet body of the Red Wag, the contrasting black wagtail fins, and the dramatic tall dorsal fin of the hi-fin mutation. The result is one of the most visually impactful platy varieties available.
The hi-fin trait increases the apparent size of the fish and gives it an imposing silhouette against a planted background. Under bright aquarium lighting the red body glows intensely against the black finnage.
An easy-to-keep, beginner-friendly variety that nonetheless delivers spectacular visual results — a reliable highlight of any community aquarium.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; tolerant and hardy. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted community; avoid nippy species that target the tall dorsal. Feeding: Quality flake, colour-enhancing foods; 2 meals daily. Breeding: Prolific; hi-fin dominant; red and wagtail traits reliably inherited. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with tetras, rasboras, corydoras.
