Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Red Wag Platy, Wagtail Platy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico/Guatemala)
The Red Wag Platy is produced by combining the red body gene with the wagtail gene, which causes all fins to develop solid black colouration. The result is a vivid contrast between the rich crimson-red body and the jet-black dorsal, caudal, and ventral fins.
This variety has been one of the most popular platies since its development in the mid-20th century and remains a bestseller in aquatic shops worldwide. It carries all the excellent hardiness and adaptability of Xiphophorus maculatus, making it suitable for virtually any community aquarium.
Red Wag Platies are particularly effective in heavily planted tanks where the deep red body colour pops against green foliage.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water; highly adaptable. Tank: 60 L minimum; plants provide cover for females and fry; moderate filtration. Feeding: Accepts all foods readily; a varied diet including vegetable matter maintains best condition. Breeding: Prolific; fry are large and robust; easily raised on crushed flake from birth. Compatibility: Outstanding community fish; compatible with virtually all peaceful species.
