Carassius auratus
Also known as: Red-White Lionhead, Bi-color Lionhead, Shishi Goldfish
Origin: China
The Red-White Lionhead is particularly attractive due to the contrast between its vibrant red-and-white body and the pale, lumpy wen that envelops the head. This variety is commonly kept by Chinese goldfish enthusiasts and is gaining popularity internationally. Wen health monitoring is key to long-term care success.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, zero ammonia — elevated ammonia causes wen ulceration. Tank: minimum 120 L, low décor, shallow water depth preferred. Feeding: sinking foods only, small portions twice daily; include vegetable matter regularly. Behaviour: gentle bottom-dweller; may need hand-feeding if wen obscures vision. Compatibility: lionhead and ranchu are ideal tank mates; avoid energetic fish.
