Carassius auratus
Also known as: Ryukin Goldfish, Red-White Ryukin, Hump-back Goldfish
Origin: Japan
The Ryukin is distinguished from other fancy goldfish by its pronounced shoulder hump and deep, compressed body. The Red-White Ryukin is one of the most popular color forms, with striking contrast that remains vivid throughout its life. It is a relatively strong swimmer compared to other egg-shaped goldfish and tolerates a range of tank conditions.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, well-filtered and oxygenated coldwater tank. Tank: minimum 150 L with open swimming space; the deep body needs depth as well as length. Feeding: sinking pellets, peas, lettuce, occasional frozen brine shrimp or daphnia. Behaviour: active and enthusiastic feeder; will compete well at feeding time. Compatibility: compatible with other fancy goldfish; avoid very timid varieties it may outcompete.
