Red Zebra

Metriaclima estherae is a popular and robustly coloured mbuna from Lake Malawi. Unlike most cichlids, both sexes share similar colouration — vivid orange-red — though males can develop a blue morph. It is a hardy, active species that does well in a typical mbuna community and is one of the best-selling African cichlids worldwide.

Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline water. Tank: 180L minimum with extensive rocky structure for territory division. Feeding: Algae-based diet; spirulina pellets and flakes; avoid high-protein to prevent bloat. Behaviour: Moderately aggressive; females and sub-males can be harassed by dominant males. Compatibility: Standard mbuna community; avoid mixing with overly docile species.
