Origin: South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil)
Laetacara dorsigera, the Redbreast Acara, originates from the Rio Paraguay and lower Rio Parana basins in Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil. It is prized for its intense red-orange breast colouration that deepens dramatically during breeding. Males develop subtle blue-green iridescence on the flanks and elongated dorsal fin rays. A tolerant species that adapts well to a range of water conditions.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 6.0-7.5, GH 5-15, KH 1-8; one of the most adaptable acara species. Tank: 60L minimum; plants and flat stones for spawning; moderate flow. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts flake, pellets, and frozen foods easily. Behaviour: Peaceful and relatively bold; pairs engage in shared biparental care. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; compatible with most peaceful tropical species.
