Carinotetraodon lorteti
Also known as: Redeye Dwarf Puffer, Lorteti Puffer
Origin: Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam
Carinotetraodon lorteti occurs in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam in slow-flowing rivers and irrigation ditches with dense vegetation. The red eyes and subtle body pattern make it a popular alternative to the Pea Puffer for hobbyists seeking variety. It shares the same requirement for live or frozen invertebrate foods and a snail supply for beak maintenance.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; neutral, clean water is optimal. Tank: Minimum 50 L; heavily planted with fine-leaved vegetation and caves or driftwood for territory. Feeding: Ramshorn snails, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and small shrimp. Behaviour: Active patroller; males highly territorial — females are less aggressive but still fin-nippers. Compatibility: Species-only; incompatible with any slow or long-finned tankmates.
