Ancistrus sp. (L024)
Also known as: Redfin Dwarf Pleco, L024 Pleco, Red-finned Bristlenose
Origin: Rio Tocantins, Brazil
The Redfin Dwarf Pleco (L024) is a compact and colourful loricariid from the Rio Tocantins basin. Its dark body is covered in a fine spotted pattern, and the fins are edged with vivid red-orange pigmentation that becomes especially pronounced in mature males kept in optimal water conditions. Its small adult size makes it attractive for planted and community aquariums.
Care for L024 requires warm, soft to moderately hard water with good flow and filtration. It is an omnivore that grazes on algae and accepts a wide range of prepared foods. Offer algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched courgette, and occasional frozen protein foods. Driftwood provides both nutrition and essential hiding spots.
The Redfin Dwarf Pleco pairs well with small to medium-sized community fish. It is not overly territorial but males will defend preferred caves from rivals. In larger aquariums a small group of one male to several females can be kept together, sometimes resulting in natural spawning behaviour.
Water: pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 25–29°C, GH 2–10, KH 1–5; warm, clean conditions enhance fin colour. Tank: 80 L minimum; driftwood, fine substrate, multiple small caves or PVC pipes. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, spirulina, blanched veg, occasional frozen bloodworm. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; group keeping may stimulate breeding behaviour. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with small to medium community fish; males territorial toward rivals.
