About

The Redfin Hillstream Nemacheilus is one of the most visually rewarding Nemacheilus species in the trade when fully conditioned, with sexually mature males developing intense orange-red suffusion across the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins that contrasts sharply with the cryptic mottled body patterning. This sexual dichromatism is a reliable indicator of health and conditioning — faded fin colour signals stress or water quality decline before other symptoms appear.

Native to fast-flowing rocky streams of the Greater Mekong Subregion, this species inhabits the same high-energy, oxygen-saturated environments as other hillstream loaches. It is moderately demanding — more so than beginner Nemacheilus species but less extreme than Sewellia or the most specialised Gastromyzon — and is well-suited to an intermediate keeper's hillstream setup.

In groups, males display to one another and to females with spread fins and brightened colouration. This display behaviour is engaging and largely harmless. A well-maintained group in a spacious hillstream aquarium with strong flow and regular water changes will maintain vibrant colouration and active behavioural display year-round.

Care Guide

Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; moderate to strong flow and high oxygenation; fin colour is a direct indicator of water quality. Tank: 80 L minimum; smooth pebble substrate with rocky hiding zones; powerful flow to encourage fin display behaviour. Feeding: Omnivore — frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp enhance red-fin colouration; supplement with sinking pellets and daphnia. Breeding: Rarely documented; males display intensely when conditioned; condition with cool water changes and increased flow. Compatibility: Peaceful toward unrelated species; mild inter-male competition; avoid housing with very long-finned or slow-moving fish.
