Semaprochilodus taeniurus
Origin: Amazon River basin, South America
The Redfin Prochilodus (Semaprochilodus taeniurus) is a striking migratory characin from the Amazon basin with vivid red-and-black striped fins that create a dazzling effect when a group swims together. A mud-sucker by nature, it grazes on biofilm, algae, and detritus from surfaces, appreciating a tank with some natural algal growth. Groups of four or more show the best behaviour and most intense fin coloration.
Minimum 300 L with long swimming space and surfaces for grazing. pH 5.5–7.5, GH 1–12, KH 0–6, temperature 23–28°C. Primarily herbivorous — feed algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables, and Repashy. Groups of 4+ show best behaviour. Large, powerful fish; keep with robust similarly-sized species. Strong filtration essential. 30% weekly water changes.
