Myleus rubripinnis rubripinnis
Also known as: Redhook Silver Dollar, Redhook Myleus
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
Myleus rubripinnis rubripinnis is among the most visually stunning schooling serrasalmids available in the hobby. Adults display a brilliant orange-red anal fin that trails dramatically beneath a deep, silver-scaled body, creating a striking contrast that intensifies during breeding condition. It is found across the Amazon and Orinoco basins and can grow to 28 cm.
In the aquarium it is a dedicated herbivore, consuming aquatic plants with enthusiasm and requiring a diet rich in vegetable matter. Large groups of six or more display natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual skittishness. It is peaceful toward non-conspecifics and makes an excellent companion for large South American cichlids.
Not subject to piranha restrictions in most regions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-7.0, soft to moderately soft (2-10 dGH); Amazon and Orinoco origin means soft, slightly acidic water preferred. Tank: Minimum 600L for a school of 6; tall tank format suits the deep body; open swimming space; avoid soft-leaved plants. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina pellets and flake, blanched greens, cucumber, courgette, and occasional fruit; high-quality plant-based diet essential. Breeding: Egg-scattering species; males develop more intense red colouration during spawning; large bare tank required. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent dither fish for large cichlids; avoid housing with very soft-bodied or fragile species.
