Geophagus steindachneri is a maternal mouthbrooder from the rivers of Colombia and Venezuela. Males develop a striking red nuchal hump that becomes more pronounced during spawning. Relatively peaceful and tolerant of harder water than most Geophagus species.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 250L, fine sand substrate, open swimming areas with some driftwood. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, quality cichlid flake. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive between males; females and juveniles generally peaceful in groups. Compatibility: Suitable with medium-large tetras, peaceful cichlids, and catfish.
