Hemiancistrus sp. (L013)
Also known as: Redline Pleco, L013 Pleco, Red-stripe Pleco
Origin: Rio Tocantins, Brazil
The Redline Pleco (L013) is a visually stunning loricariid from the Rio Tocantins basin, distinguished by vivid red-orange lines that trace along its dark body and extend into the fins. This colouration intensifies in healthy, well-conditioned specimens kept in warm, soft, slightly acidic water.
In the aquarium L013 thrives with excellent water flow and regular water changes. Driftwood is an important element both as a food source and as shelter, and the tank should contain multiple cave structures for territorial refuge. The species is an omnivore that benefits from a diet of algae wafers, wood-feeding pellets, blanched vegetables, and protein supplements such as frozen bloodworm.
The Redline Pleco is moderately peaceful but can show aggression toward other large plecos sharing its territory. It coexists well with active mid-water fish such as tetras and barbs. Consistent water quality is paramount — any deterioration rapidly dulls the characteristic red line colouration.
Water: pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 25–29°C, GH 2–10, KH 1–6; soft, warm water enhances colour. Tank: 180 L minimum; driftwood essential, caves, and moderate to strong flow. Feeding: Omnivore; mix of algae wafers, wood pellets, blanched veg, and frozen protein foods. Breeding: Cave spawner; not commonly bred in captivity; conditioning with high protein foods recommended. Compatibility: Peaceful with mid-level fish; can be aggressive toward other large plecos.
