Sahyadria chalakkudiensis
Also known as: Redline Torpedo Barb, Chalakudy Barb, Miss Kerala Torpedo Barb
Origin: Asia (Chalakudy River, Western Ghats, Kerala, India)

The Redline Torpedo Barb (Sahyadria chalakkudiensis), formerly classified as Puntius chalakkudiensis, is a large barb endemic to the Chalakudy River in the Western Ghats of Kerala, India. It is closely related to the more widely available Denison's Barb (S. denisonii) and shares similar torpedo-shaped body morphology, vivid coloration, and care requirements.
Males display a brilliant red lateral stripe from the snout to mid-body, a black stripe below it along the flanks, and yellow accents in the fins — an almost identical pattern to Denison's Barb, which has led to frequent confusion between the two species. The Chalakudy Barb tends to be slightly stockier and the red stripe is often slightly more saturated, but distinguishing them in the trade can be difficult.
Like its cousin, this species grows to 12–15 cm and needs a large aquarium with strong current and high oxygenation. It is listed as Critically Endangered due to its extremely restricted natural range and severe population decline from overcollection and habitat loss. Captive-bred specimens are strongly preferred and increasingly available.
Care requirements are identical to S. denisonii: large schools in spacious, well-filtered aquariums with strong water flow, neutral to slightly acidic water, and a varied omnivorous diet. Active, boisterous, and stunning — a showpiece species for dedicated large-tank keepers.
Water Parameters: Maintain pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 18–25°C, GH 5–15. Like all Western Ghats species, cool, well-oxygenated water is critical. High dissolved oxygen levels are essential — use a powerhead, spray bar, or airstone. Avoid temperatures above 26°C.
Tank Setup: Minimum 300 liters for a group of 6. Use a sandy or fine-gravel substrate with smooth boulders and robust plants tolerant of current. Provide long open swimming lanes. Strong filtration (high turnover rate) is essential. A tight-fitting lid is required as these are powerful jumpers.
Feeding: Omnivores accepting quality flake food, medium pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and vegetable matter. Feed twice daily. Varied diet maintains vibrant coloration and overall health.
Tankmates: Best kept with other large, robust peaceful fish: other Sahyadria barbs, large tetras, robust loaches, and peaceful cichlids that tolerate cooler water. Avoid small, fragile, or timid species that may be overwhelmed by their boisterous activity.
Health: Hardy in appropriate conditions. Most health issues arise from warm temperatures and poor oxygenation. Perform 30% water changes weekly. Watch for ich and bacterial infections. Source captive-bred specimens to support conservation.
