Ophioblennius atlanticus
Origin: Caribbean Sea, Tropical Atlantic
The Redlip Blenny (Ophioblennius atlanticus) is a Caribbean species distinguished by its mottled brownish body and distinctive red-orange lips. A voracious algae grazer, it patrols a defined territory on rockwork and defends it vigorously against other blennies. A useful and characterful member of a Caribbean biotope or general reef aquarium, providing practical algae control alongside personality-rich behaviour.
Minimum 100 L reef or FOWLR with rockwork for territory establishment. pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 23–27°C. Primarily algae-grazer — supplement with nori and spirulina if natural algae is insufficient. Keep one per tank — highly territorial with conspecifics and other blennies. Reef-safe with corals. Generally reef-safe but may nip at zoanthids or clam mantles.
