Pterygoplichthys sp. (L003)
Also known as: Redlip Pleco, L003 Pleco
Origin: Rio Tocantins, Brazil
The Redlip Pleco (L003) is a large, hardy loricariid from the Rio Tocantins basin of central Brazil. It inhabits rocky river bottoms with moderate to strong current and benefits from excellent oxygenation in the aquarium. Its pale grey body is covered in bold dark spots, and the subtle red colouration of the lower lip gives it its common name.
As a primarily herbivorous species, L003 grazes heavily on biofilm, algae, and soft wood. Driftwood should be provided both as a dietary supplement and as shelter. Supplement the diet with blanched vegetables, spirulina wafers, and occasional protein-rich foods to maintain condition.
Despite its large potential size, the Redlip Pleco is peaceful and can coexist with most community fish. Keep the aquarium well-filtered with strong flow, and avoid tankmates that compete for the same cave territories.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; weekly 30% water changes essential. Tank: 200 L minimum; include large driftwood, smooth rocks, and multiple caves for shelter. Feeding: Primarily herbivore — spirulina wafers, blanched courgette, cucumber, and driftwood for grazing. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; requires distinct dry/wet season simulation to trigger spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with most species; avoid housing with similarly territorial large plecos.
