Barbus bifrenatus
Also known as: Redspot Barb, Two-Banded Barb, Hyphen Barb
Origin: South Africa, Mozambique
Native to rivers and streams in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape of South Africa and extending into Mozambique, Barbus bifrenatus inhabits clear, often fast-flowing waters with sandy or rocky substrates. Its key field mark is the dark spot near the base of the caudal fin, sometimes accompanied by a fainter humeral mark. Males show coppery-orange tints on the flanks during breeding season.
This species tolerates cooler water than many tropical barbs, making it an excellent candidate for subtropical or temperate aquarium setups alongside other cool-water species. It is active and schools well, becoming more confident and bold in groups of six or more.
Barbus bifrenatus is an easy feeder, readily accepting flake, pellet, and frozen foods. It rarely shows aggression toward tankmates and is compatible with a wide range of community fish provided temperatures are kept at the cooler end of the tropical range.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate hardness (GH 5–15). Tank: 80 L minimum; sandy substrate with rocks and plant cover; moderate current. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm, occasional vegetable matter. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; slightly cooler water and fine plants encourage spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful; works well with other cool-water barbs, tetras, and rainbow fish.
