Erpetoichthys calabaricus
Origin: West Africa (Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo)
The Reedfish or Ropefish (Erpetoichthys calabaricus) is a primitive, eel-like polypterid from West Africa with a serpentine body, primitive lobed fins, and the ability to breathe atmospheric air. A nocturnal predator that prowls the substrate for worms, crustaceans, and small fish after dark while spending much of the day tucked under décor. Escape-proofing the aquarium is critical — this species is an expert at finding and exploiting tiny gaps.
Minimum 200 L with thick lid, no gaps larger than 1 cm. pH 6.0–7.5, GH 2–15, KH 0–8, temperature 22–28°C. Feed live and frozen earthworms, bloodworm, shrimp, and sinking carnivore pellets at night. Peaceful with fish too large to swallow; will eat small fish and shrimp. Nocturnal — provide caves and hiding spots. Must access surface air. Can be kept in groups.
