Ancistrus ranunculus (L035)
Also known as: Regani Pleco, L035 Pleco, Spotted Amazon Pleco
Origin: Río Ucayali, Peru
The Regani Pleco (L035) is a medium-sized loricariid from the Río Ucayali and related Peruvian Amazon tributaries. Its densely spotted body pattern, with uniform dark brown to black spots on a lighter base, gives it a classic pleco appearance that appeals to both beginners and experienced keepers. It is a calm, undemanding species by L-number standards.
L035 is primarily herbivorous and feeds readily on algae, biofilm, blanched vegetables, and spirulina wafers in the aquarium. Driftwood is an important habitat component, providing a surface for grazing as well as caves and sheltered resting areas. Moderate water flow and regular water changes maintain the fish in peak condition.
This species integrates well into South American community aquariums. It is generally non-territorial and can coexist with other medium-sized plecos provided sufficient cave structures are available. Compatible tankmates include tetras, corydoras, peaceful cichlids, and other loricariids of similar temperament.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; moderate flow, regular water changes. Tank: 150 L minimum; driftwood essential; smooth rocks and multiple caves for shelter. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina wafers, algae pellets, blanched vegetables, driftwood grazing. Breeding: Cave spawner; conditioning with improved diet and water changes may trigger breeding. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with most South American community species.
