Reganochromis calliurus
Also known as: Lyretail Lamprologus, Calliurus Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Reganochromis calliurus is a poorly known and infrequently available member of tribe Lamprologini from Lake Tanganyika. It is characterised by a deep compressed body and, in mature males, elongated lyre-shaped extensions to the caudal fin rays that create a distinctive and elegant silhouette.
This species is a carnivore feeding on invertebrates and small fish in the wild. In the aquarium it requires the same general care as other large Lamprologini: alkaline hard water, extensive rocky décor, high-quality meaty diet, and adequate space for territorial behaviour.
R. calliurus is a specialist fish rarely seen outside dedicated Tanganyika cichlid collections. Its unusual morphology and rarity make it a genuinely prized addition to any advanced Tanganyika display.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–16; stable hard alkaline water essential. Tank: 400 L minimum; large rocky structures with caves; open midwater swimming space. Feeding: Large cichlid pellets; frozen shrimp, krill, and whitebait; feed twice daily; occasional live food. Breeding: Presumed cave or rock spawner; very limited captive breeding records. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; house with robust, similarly sized Tanganyika species.
