Auriglobus remotus
Also known as: Remote Gold Puffer, Pale Gold Puffer, Remote Puffer
Origin: Remote Borneo rivers, Indonesia
Auriglobus remotus is the most seldom-encountered of the three Auriglobus species and has been collected only from remote, poorly accessible blackwater river systems in interior Borneo. Its colouration is a paler, less saturated gold compared to A. modestus, and its body may show faint ghostly reticulations under close inspection. Blackwater conditions with very low conductivity, pH below 7.0, and warm temperatures are essential for long-term health. This species has a more secretive disposition than its congeners and appreciates dense planting and darker décor. It will not thrive in hard alkaline water. Importing it is rare and stocks are extremely limited; it is a prized acquisition for specialist puffer keepers.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28°C, very soft and low conductivity; tannin-stained water beneficial. Tank: 100 L minimum; blackwater setup with dried leaves, driftwood; dim lighting; tight-fitting lid. Feeding: Small snails, mussels, defrosted bloodworm, clam flesh; avoid overly large hard items. Breeding: Completely undocumented; presumed similar to congeners. Compatibility: Single specimen; extreme aggression toward tankmates; species-only tank mandatory.
