Danio rerio (longfin wild strain)
Also known as: Longfin Wild Zebrafish, Wildtype Longfin Danio
Origin: Captive-bred (India origin)
The Rerio Longfin Wild is a captive-bred longfin variety of Danio rerio developed from wild-type genetic stock rather than the highly domesticated aquarium strains. As a result, the fish displays colouration and body proportions closer to wild Zebra Danios, with the classic bold blue-silver horizontal stripes and a more natural body shape, enhanced by beautifully elongated fins.
In the aquarium it is as hardy and adaptable as any standard Zebra Danio — one of the toughest and most forgiving freshwater fish available. The longfin trait requires that fin-nipping tankmates be excluded, but otherwise the fish's care is entirely straightforward. It thrives in groups of eight or more and brings lively, constant motion to the mid-water.
For aquascapers and planted tank enthusiasts who want a reliable, easy-to-keep schooling fish with visual elegance, the Longfin Wild Danio represents an accessible and attractive choice that bridges the gap between the ultra-hardy beginner fish and more decorative longfin varieties.
Water: Temperature 18–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 5–15; extremely adaptable; among the hardiest of all aquarium fish species. Tank: Minimum 60 L; open swimming space; tight lid essential; planted perimeter with clear midwater swimming lanes. Feeding: Omnivorous; accepts all foods readily; varied diet maintains colouration; live daphnia and brine shrimp improve condition. Breeding: Easy egg-scatterer; longfin trait partially heritable; spawns readily in most conditions over plants or spawning mop. Compatibility: Peaceful with similarly sized active community fish; avoid all fin-nipping species to protect longfin extensions.
