Crenicichla reticulata
Also known as: Reticulata Pike Cichlid, Reticulated Pike Cichlid, Net-pattern Pike Cichlid
Origin: Amazon basin, Brazil/Peru/Colombia
Crenicichla reticulata is one of the most frequently exported large pike cichlids, a widespread Amazonian species with a distinctive net-like reticulated pattern overlaying a pale beige-olive body. This reticulation — dark scale margins creating a mesh appearance — is consistent and recognisable across all populations and makes this species immediately identifiable even to casual hobbyists.
Despite reaching 35 cm, C. reticulata is considered one of the more tolerant large Crenicichla in terms of water chemistry and feeding response. It handles a range of soft-to-moderately-hard conditions and feeds aggressively on a wide variety of frozen and prepared carnivore foods, making it less demanding than many large predatory cichlids of comparable size.
A 500 L aquarium is the appropriate minimum for an adult. The tank should feature substantial driftwood, large flat stones for shelter, and a deep sandy substrate. Despite its size C. reticulata is a popular species with cichlid enthusiasts who want a large, impressive, reliably manageable predator as a centrepiece display fish.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0 at 24–28°C; adaptable to soft-to-moderately-hard water. Tank: 500 L minimum for adults; very large driftwood, flat stone shelters, deep sand. Feeding: Large frozen foods and cichlid sticks/pellets; feed every 2–3 days; avoid overfeeding. Breeding: Large cave spawner; strong biparental care; requires exceptional tank size. Compatibility: Species tank; size alone makes most tankmates unsafe.
