Potamotrygon orbignyi
Also known as: Reticulate Stingray, Smooth Back River Ray
Origin: Amazon & Orinoco basins, coastal South American rivers
Potamotrygon orbignyi is one of the most widespread freshwater stingray species in South America, found in the Amazon, Orinoco, and numerous coastal river drainages. Its elongated, narrow disc and fine reticulate pattern of brown lines on a pale ground distinguish it readily from the rounder Potamotrygon motoro. In captivity it tends to be more active and less inclined to bury itself, spending considerable time patrolling the tank bottom. Like all potamotrygonids it is a viviparous species with small litters. Water quality demands are identical to other rays: zero tolerance for ammonia or nitrite. Its broader natural range means it encounters a slightly wider range of water chemistry in the wild, though soft, acidic conditions are still preferred in captivity for optimal health and colour.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water preferred (2–8 dGH); immaculate water quality essential. Tank: Minimum 400L, wide sandy base, gentle flow, no abrasive substrate or sharp ornaments. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, frozen bloodworm, prawns, small whitebait; feed every other day. Breeding: Viviparous; gestation approximately 3 months; litters of 2–8 pups; separate gravid females. Compatibility: Peaceful with large, non-aggressive fish; avoid fin-nippers and anything small enough to be eaten.
