Glyptosternon reticulatum
Also known as: Reticulated Hillstream Sisorid, Reticulate Glyptosternon, Net Catfish
Origin: South/Southeast Asia (Afghanistan to Vietnam — Hindu Kush–Himalayan river systems)
Glyptosternon reticulatum is a widely distributed sisorid catfish found across a vast range from Afghanistan through Pakistan, India, Nepal, Myanmar, and Vietnam, inhabiting fast-flowing rocky rivers and mountain streams of the Hindu Kush and Himalayan region. Its common name refers to the striking reticulated (net-like) pattern of pale lines on a brown background that covers the entire body, providing superb camouflage against patterned rock surfaces. The genus is characterised by thoracic adhesive structures that anchor the fish to smooth substrates in strong current.
In the aquarium, Glyptosternon reticulatum requires a well-designed fast-water setup with strong circulation, high dissolved oxygen, smooth rounded river rocks, and cool water temperatures. It is one of the larger sisorids available to hobbyists, reaching 20 cm, and therefore requires a more substantial setup than smaller hillstream catfish like Hara or Akysis. In appropriate conditions it is an active, visible species during the day.
This species is peaceful and compatible with other cool, fast-water inhabitants including hillstream loaches, Schistura loaches, and other sisorid catfish. Feed with a mix of aufwuchs, frozen invertebrates, and small sinking wafers. Its reticulated patterning, active behaviour, and impressive size for a hillstream specialist make it a standout species for the advanced rheophilic aquarium.
Water: 15–24°C, pH 6.5–7.8, moderately hard (GH 5–18); very high oxygen levels and strong flow required. Tank: 120 L minimum; large smooth river stones and boulders; very powerful filtration and circulation. Feeding: Aufwuchs, frozen bloodworm, sinking wafers and carnivore pellets; active day feeder. Breeding: Not achieved in home aquaria; mountain river spawner. Compatibility: Peaceful; compatible with hillstream loaches, Schistura, and other cool-water rheophiles.
