Polypterus retropinnis
Also known as: Retropinnis Bichir, West African Bichir
Origin: Congo basin, Central Africa
Polypterus retropinnis is a slender, smooth-patterned bichir from the Congo basin with soft grey-green colouration and low-contrast irregular barring. It reaches around 40cm and is considered one of the gentler and less aggressive polypterids, making it a good candidate for mixed-species large fish displays. Its care is fully standard for the genus, with the usual requirements for surface access, a meaty diet, fine substrate, and an escape-proof lid. While it lacks the visual drama of P. ornatipinnis or the size of P. endlicheri, its adaptability and tolerant temperament make it a practical and often overlooked choice. It occasionally appears in the trade mislabelled as P. senegalus and is worth inspecting carefully when purchasing.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; stable temperature and consistent water changes weekly. Tank: Minimum 200L, fine or smooth substrate, caves for retreat, very secure lid to prevent climbing out. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, frozen bloodworm, prawn; accepts sinking pellets readily after acclimatisation. Breeding: Rare in captivity; no significantly different protocol to other small-medium polypterids. Compatibility: One of the most peaceful bichirs; compatible with large robust community fish.
