Rheoheros lentiginosus
Also known as: Freckled Cichlid, Freckle Cichlid
Origin: Mexico, Guatemala (Usumacinta)
Rheoheros lentiginosus (also referred to under Theraps in older literature) is a visually distinctive cichlid from the Usumacinta river system in Mexico and Guatemala. Its common name perfectly describes its appearance: fine dark freckles distributed densely over a blue-grey base create a unique visual texture that makes this species immediately recognizable. The freckled pattern intensifies in dominant individuals and during breeding.
As its genus name suggests, R. lentiginosus is a true rheophile — adapted to life in flowing water. It requires moderate to strong current in the aquarium and high dissolved oxygen levels to thrive. In still-water setups the fish will be stressed and prone to disease.
This species is a grazing herbivore-omnivore that feeds on biofilm, algae, and associated invertebrates in its natural habitat. A diet including spirulina-based foods is important for maintaining the distinctive blue-grey base coloration and overall health.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–20, KH 4–12; high flow and oxygen levels essential. Tank: 300 L minimum; large rounded river rocks, sand substrate; multiple flow-return nozzles. Feeding: Omnivore — spirulina pellets, algae wafers, blanched greens, with occasional meaty foods. Breeding: Spawns on rock surfaces in current; biparental care; eggs fanned constantly. Compatibility: Other rheophilic CA cichlids; unsuitable for still-water community setups.
