Rhinogobius similis
Also known as: Rhinogobius Similis Goby, Similis Stream Goby, Taiwan Fine-spot Goby
Origin: Taiwan, southern China
Rhinogobius similis is a small stream goby found in clear, cool river systems of Taiwan and southern China, where it inhabits riffle and run zones over gravel and cobble substrates alongside other hillstream species. Males display the typical Rhinogobius patterning of orange-red to warm amber spots along the flanks and vivid facial markings on the cheeks and throat, though the spots are generally smaller and more finely distributed than in species such as R. duospilus. It is one of the more peaceable and modestly sized members of the genus, rarely exceeding 4.5 cm, making it an ideal candidate for nano hillstream setups. In captivity it is hardy and active, spending its time perching on rocks and stones while scanning for small invertebrate prey. It adapts well to aquarium conditions provided water remains cool, clean, and well-oxygenated. Cave spawning behaviour has been documented in captivity.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 7.0–7.8, GH 5–15, KH 3–10; cool and well-oxygenated; avoid tropical temperatures above 24 °C. Tank: 40 L minimum; smooth river pebble substrate with flat stone caves; moderate to brisk flow. Feeding: Carnivore; frozen bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops, and small sinking pellets; feeds readily from the substrate. Breeding: Cave spawner under flat stones; male guards eggs; amphidromous larvae rarely raised in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; suits hillstream community tanks; mild territorial displays between males.
